10 Weeks Intro to Improv!

Level 1 – Intro to Improv / Harold Crash Course

This crash course is designed for people new to improv and acting, just new or rusty with long form improvisation, or people who just want to revisit the basics in a more structured manner. Any improviser that completes this course will be ready to perform a show-quality long-form piece with the other members of the class.

Topics Covered: Acceptance, Spontaneity, Teamwork, Characters, Object Work, Relationships, Environment, The Game of the Scene, First Beats, Second Beats, Group Games, Third Beats

5 Weeks Advanced Improv!

Level 2 – The Movie / Stylizing the Harold

The Movie is a form that borrows heavily from the Harold in structure, but with more opportunity to deviate from the 3/3/3 scene format. Additionally, The Movie requires improvisers to fine tune their edits to elicit specific emotions from the audience and convey important context details to fellow improvisers. Skills required of The Movie (e.g. interesting edits) can be applied to a more general Harold performance.

Topics Covered: Theatrical Scene Painting, Genres and Tropes, Show Don’t Tell, Offering Information w/o Pimping Scene Partners, Adapting Plot Structures to Improvisation, Applying Stylized Movie Edits to Improvisation

He’s been featured in other festivals such as DuoFest in Philadelphia, the Fall Back Comedy Fest in Rochester, and has performed several times in the Del Close Marathon in NYC.

Since bringing his talents to Gainesville, Austin has taught his Intro to Improv class, the first of which became local long form team Sometimes Funny, and is the current Co-Artistic Director. He’s the current coach of Sometimes Funny, and performs with three person team Jan and teah.

Jon Branch

Jon’s improv adventure began May 2016 and he still hasn’t stopped obsessing. He can be found performing in the long form team Sometimes Funny and Jan, while substitute coaching and teaching for groups around Gainesville! Jon is also the Co-Artistic Director, Managing Director and Founder of House Improv.

When not reading, watching, or doing improv he enjoys playing guitar, going to concerts, and trying not to eat carbs. If you ever have questions about improv Jon will talk to you forever about it!
